Helen Murgatroyd

Originally from Kendal in Cumbria, Helen now lives and works in Bude, North Cornwall where she moved following an artist residency in 2011.

Helen makes linocuts that document the rural community she lives and works in. Her practice is rooted in observational drawing - attending traditional local events she documents in her sketchbooks the places and people she meets. In her studio, working directly from these drawings, she creates images that aim to capture humility in the work and leisure activities she depicts.

She studied Graphic Design in Manchester before completing an MA in Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2010. She exhibits her work widely, most recently as a featured maker at ‘Make Southwest’ and at ‘Printfest’ in Cumbria, where she was voted ‘Printmaker’s Printmaker’. Having recently become a Mum in 2023 she anticipates a change in working methods and potentially subject matter as she navigates raising a young family alongside her printmaking practice.
